A Child Recalls...

When I skinned my knees, it was he who bandaged my knee,
When I was sad, he would be the one to hold me,
When I was older, I would fight and shout, and he would just sit and smile,
Dad, it’s been a long while.

Through my heartbreaks and struggles,
He guided me like a general through the battles,
Spent years in awe of him in his uniform,
Now, I know, it’s the norm.

Wanted to be like him, make him proud,
I could always count on him to cheer me aloud,
He had his own heartbreaks and battles to fight,
Yet, always, to me he was like a benevolent knight.

In December, he wrote a simple letter, short and sweet,
Promising his secret recipe's repeat,
Except memories, nothing remains now, not even ashes,
Pardon me, I suddenly have something in my eye lashes.

Wish he was here so that I could tell him he is now a grand dad,
I would have given anything to see him hold her in his hands,
Yet I know he will always be there,

He was my strength, now he is my prayer.
